My Problem With Current State of AI
Personally I don’t like the way most companies imagine what AI should be. For some time I didn’t have anything constructive to say on the matter, because either I didn’t care or couldn’t pick a key argument among all the things I don’t like. And I wouldn’t say I have anything constructive now, but here are my thoughts that should answer why I am usually negative when talking about AI-hype.
Often I see that some people don’t treat GPT as tool but as an expert - a magic black box that spits out the answers and can imitate intelligent behaviour. This is the part where I actually don’t care. We treated news, google search results, etc. in similar way. So if a doctor wouldn’t try to treat me based on GPT answers I wouldn’t care.
I don’t take an issue with an avarage user, my issue is with the innovators and the developers who imagines the future of AI.
Naturally, most of my interactions with generative AI comes to the coding tools like Github Copilot. And as long as it works as an assitant, I actually appreciate it a lot. I figured out when and how to use it in my workflow so it actually helps. News flash - In my editor it is actually turned off most of the time. I use it for routine tasks like generating header files - the things where it’s easier to fix rather than type everthig yourself.
The main reason why I fell in love with programming is that computers are not humans. I make exact instructions, compose algorithms and a program does what I insturucted it to do, not what it assumes but exatly what I specified. I am the overlord - an algorithm is a tool. I have full control over everything my tools do.
I don’t like that some companies naming their products as “assistants”, but aiming to make independent agents. I don’t want a tool to have agency or any freedom to act without my knowledge. I don’t want to “ask” Chat GPT - I want to order it. The problem is that at the time there’s no good interface to interact with AI and control it in an effective way. And it seems no one even imagines anything beyond one-dimentional chats or voice.
I am disappointed at so-called “innovators”. It seems when building products around AI everyone tries to iterate over old patterns. Are the chats most effettive way to interact with AI? It’s one-dimmensional and it is time-consuming.
I know that figuring out a way to interact with AI is hard. I am trying to do it myself, but seriously, [Microsoft Apple Google], with all of your resources your best idea is a chat?
I only scratched the surface here. I can go on, but I’ll stop here.
Peace ✌️
